What is UNDP?

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN's principal provider of development advice, advocacy and grant support. It has long enjoyed the trust and confidence of governments and NGOs in many parts of the developing as well as the developed world. It is typically regarded as a partner rather than an adversary, and its commitment to a universal presence has proven especially useful in post-conflict situations and with states that had been otherwise isolated from the international community

When was UNDP launched in UAE?

The UNDP UAE was Launched on 19th January 1977 as a development partner to the government in a variety of projects spanning many fields ,and has shaped its services in response to the nations development needs.

What does UNDP UAE do?

The main services provided by the UNDP UAE are

  1. UNDP UAE will focus on strengthening existing partnerships with government institutions , parliament, NGOs, the private sector, bilateral donors and academic institutions.
  2. To enable and enhance effective implementation of the Country Programme
  3. UNDP will continue to link into BDP,SURF and international and regional UNDP programmes such as the Global Parliamentary support Programme; the regional programmes on governance  ,ICT for Development (ICTDAR),trade, economic growth and human development,, HIV/AIDS (HARPAS), and the centre for Arab Women Training and Research(CAWTAR)
  4. UNDP UAE will actively collaborate with specialized UN agencies and UN ESCWA in providing appropriate development support to the UAE Government and help in their decision making process..
  5. Actively follow up the MDGs achievements.

 

Who are the decision-makers (in UNDP and our partners)?

UNDP programme in the UAE is governed by the country programme (CP 2007-2011), and all decisions that pertain to the CP/Projects are approved by the Resident Representative in consultation with national authorities (federal or emirate) level inline with their developmental priorities and aspirations.

Where does UNDP money come from and what does it spend it on?

The Government of UAE is a Net Contributing Country. As such, it is not entitled to UNDP track money. UNDP Development projects in UAE are funded, for the most part (95 to 97%) by the government. However, a small percentage of our projects is funded by Resident coordinator (RC ) fund , Development Support Services (DSS) fund and the Trust fund from the UN head quarters.

How does UNDP do business (including internal rules and regulations as well as major procurement decisions)?

Major procurement decisions are made either according to UNDP rules and regulations or in accordance with the government rules and regulations. This arrangement is usually agreed upon at the onset of a project.

What is UNDP UAE total programme delivery in the previous year?

UNDP UAE Country office programme expenditure during the year 2007 was US Dollars 3,161,525.00
