Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women

<<Back

UAE has made progress towards improving its record on gender equity. This is evidenced by UAE women’s educational attainment which has reached the MDG targets under goal 2. The ratio of girls to boys in grades 1-5 and 6-9 was 94.8 and 92.9 in 2005, respectively. However, there are some cultural practices, cultural legacies and prevalent traditions that may lead to limiting women’s role in the society. In support of this national priority UNDP along with the General Women’s Union (GWU) launched in 2006 a UAE gender mainstreaming project. The project is intended to build the capacity of GSW in order to contribute to gender empowerment in the UAE as articulated in MDG 3.
